Let us embark on a journey to uncover Angels Landing’s wonders, beginning with an exploration of the essential permit programs that regulate access to this renowned destination.

Exploring Angels Landing Permit Programs:

The Angels Landing permit was introduced on April 1, 2022, in response to overcrowding and safety concerns at the chains section of the hike. Two types of lotteries are available with Angels Landing permits at Zion National Park, Utah.

1. Seasonal Lotteries

You can opt for the seasonal lottery, which opens two months in advance and allows 20 days for application. The lottery results are then released five days after the lottery closes.

Tips:

Apply for a permit before your trip, selecting seven ranked days or times for your hike.

  • Use recreation.gov to apply for a permit during your application window.
  • Note: A $6 application fee covers up to six people, which is non-refundable.
  • Trail maintenance will close the route to Angels Landing from April 1 to April 4, 2024, with no permits issued for those dates.

Learning the Lottery Outcome:

  • Recreation.gov will email you on permit issuance, charging $3 per registered person.
  • If you cancel your permit at least two days before your hike, the $3 per person fee will be refunded.
  • Print or download your permit confirmation email, as mobile phone service is unreliable at the permit checkpoint.
  1. Daily Lottery

The second option is the daily lottery, which opens at 12:01 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mountain Time / 5 p.m. EST for the following day. Permits are issued at 4 p.m. Mountain Time / 6 p.m. EST.

    Tips:

Apply the day before your hike between 12:01 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. MT.
  • The $6 application fee is non-refundable.
  • Permits are issued at 4 p.m. MT on the day of application.

Learning the Lottery Outcome:

  • An email from recreation.gov will confirm permit issuance, charging $3 per registered person.
  • Print or download your permit confirmation email for the hike.

Important Note:

Rangers present nearby throughout Angels Landing may ask to see permits at any point along the trail, day or night. The hike begins at the Grotto, and printing or downloading your permit confirmation email is essential before starting the hike. You may need to present this copy of the permit and your identification to a ranger on the trail.
